Dear Parishioners and Friends of the Basilica:
I’m happy to report we’ve both hired and realigned several staff positions at the Basilica as we prepare to embark on our 2025 year of continuous ministry in Columbia.
First, I’m thrilled to announce that Tom Bellar assumed the position of Director of Facilities and Maintenance on July 1st having had a brief two-week overlap with Bruce Haas. Tom has managed building projects around the country to include the construction of a large new housing development near Fort Jackson. The father of five, Tom relocated to Columbia in June to be near his son and daughter-in-law. Timing is everything and Tom’s arrival and availability lined up perfectly for us. A strong Catholic, Knights of Columbus member, Tom’s already proving to be a great asset, following beautifully in Bruce’s footsteps.
Second, we’ve realigned our Faith Formation leadership to more effectively help both young and mature deepen their knowledge and relationship with Christ. Replacing Mariana Flores who left us at the end of June will be Mrs. Colleen Freeman. Colleen had served for several years as Mariana’s assistant during which time she proved herself ably. Colleen’s focus will be in two areas: youth formation – to include sacramental prep and CCD as well as supporting parental formation programs such as our ministry to families with young children and a new Moms ministry we hope to launch this fall.
Mrs. Alejandra Yang, who began working with us in late May will take on supporting our adult Faith Formation initiatives to include both English and Spanish OCIA programs, Adult Education classes and our English and “Spanglish” Young Professionals/Tapping Theology programs. We had the joy of celebrating Alejandra’s wedding only two weeks ago. She and her husband participated in our OCIA program this past year as well as my Marriage Prep class, so she brings a fresh set of eyes to the areas she’ll support. In addition, Alejandra will assist Lesley Stuart in scheduling the many activities in our parish and in providing me with some administrative support.
I hope you’ll take time to speak with these individuals and encourage them in their vital work to help us build the City of God in Columbia.
Fraternally,
Fr. Gary S. Linsky
The Very Reverend Canon Gary S. Linsky, VF, VP
